WHY THIS ISN’T A CITY BREAKDOWN

In Big Bend, distance is the real emergency.

A breakdown in town is an inconvenience. A breakdown out here is something else entirely — and knowing that difference is half of getting it handled right.

There’s no quick walk to a repair shop and no rideshare that’ll show up in ten minutes. Cell coverage across most of the park is thin to nonexistent, so even reaching help can take patience. The park spans over 800,000 acres, and it’s roughly 80 miles of highway between Alpine and the western entrance alone. An out-of-area tow company punching your location into a map has no idea what any of that means. We do. We’ve run these roads for years — we know where the signal comes back, where the shoulders vanish, and how long it honestly takes to get to you. That’s not a sales pitch out here. Stay with your vehicle

It’s shade, shelter, and the largest thing searchers can spot. Walking for help in this country is how a bad afternoon turns dangerous. Don’t do it.

Get off the roadway

Pull as far onto the shoulder as you safely can and switch on your hazards. Sightlines on these highways are short and traffic moves fast.

Find your signal, note your spot

Coverage is best near Panther Junction. Note the nearest mile marker, road name, or landmark — it’s the fastest way for us to pin your location.

Water first, always

Ration what you have and stay out of direct sun. The desert dehydrates you faster than you’d expect, even in the cooler months.
